Actively exploitedCVE-2023-38831
RARLAB WinRAR before 6.23 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code when a user attempts to view a benign file within a ZIP archive. The issue occurs because a ZIP archive may include a benign file (such as an ordinary .JPG file) and also a folder that has the same name as the benign file, and the contents of the folder (which may include executable content) are processed during an attempt to access only the benign file. This was exploited in the wild in April through October 2023.

The purpose of this lab is to empirically demonstrate that relying solely on the free, built-in Microsoft Defender Antivirus is insufficient for small businesses. While free Defender provides baseline endpoint protection, it lacks the operational capabilities, patching, and 24/7 monitoring required to stop modern, multi-stage attacks.

Fake proof-of-concept repositories have been used to deliver malware to the researchers who run them. The trust verdict is our engine's heuristic over the repository (account age, what it ships, how its stars arrived); it is a reason to read the code first, not a finding about its author.
Metasploit1
This module exploits a vulnerability in WinRAR (CVE-2023-38831). When a user opens a crafted RAR file and its embedded document, the decoy document is executed, leading to code execution.
